As quietly as possible, Ellie opened the door to Syd’s room. She saw Anita lying next to her daughter with her arm wrapped protectively around her—both sleeping. Jill sat with her feet elevated in one of those uncomfortable faded green recliners that hospitals always seemed to have. She was sleeping.
Seeing the sight reminded Ellie again about how exhausted she was. There was so much left to do before she could get Syd out of Salvation and back home where she belonged. After several unsuccessful attempts, she was able to find a mover that would pack her belongings the next day which was a relief. That of course meant Syd had to remain at Salvation for another day and night. The idea didn’t make Ellie happy but she knew that with the support that surrounded her, Syd would be safe.
Jill opened her eyes. “Hey, how is everything going?” She got up and went to Ellie who was standing in the doorway. “Let’s go outside so we don’t wake them.”
Ellie nodded and they left the room, closing the door softly behind them. “I’ve given Captain Barth the bag I took from Addison, gave the police a statement, found movers, and had four members of Salvation’s Board of Directors visit me.” She let a weary smile wreath her lips. “Everything is coming together and we can get Syd out of here tomorrow.”
“Why not today?”
“I won’t leave until all my things are packed and gone. There’s no way I’ll trust anyone here not to ransack the cottage or my office.” Ellie closed her eyes. “I’m so tired but I can’t let my guard down.”
“I’ve slept. Why don’t you let me take over for you and you get some rest.” Jill put her arm around her sister’s shoulders. “Come on. That recliner isn’t so bad and you will be in the room with Syd.”
“I’ve got to clear out my office.”
Jill held out her hand. “Keys.” When Ellie didn’t respond she shook her hand. “Come on give me the keys to your office and cottage. I know what belongs to you and what doesn’t. Please let me do this for you.”
“But—”
“No buts. You’re sluggish and won’t be fit to do anything when the time comes to leave here. Right now you need to sleep.”
“Okay, but just for an hour or so. I’ve done stressful forty-eight hour rotations, this, in comparison, is a piece of cake.” Ellie reached in her pocket and handed the keys over to Jill.
“Right. Now let’s get you settled and I’ll go to the cottage freshen up and come back with boxes for your office things.”
“Don’t let me sleep too long,” Ellie said as she sank into the chair.
“Sleep. I’ll be back soon.”
